How to use this line chart tool

This free line chart maker turns a simple table of labels and values into an editable, responsive graph. It is useful for tracking time series, comparing measurements, and finding changes that are difficult to see in a raw spreadsheet.

1. Import or paste your data

Select Import data to upload a CSV, TSV, JSON, or spreadsheet file. You can also paste comma-separated data directly into the import window. Choose the label column and the main numeric column, then select additional numeric columns if you want to compare multiple series.

For the clearest result, put one observation on each row and keep the first column for labels such as dates, product names, or experiment steps. Numeric columns should use a consistent unit and precision. The importer previews the source before applying it, so you can check headers, row order, and missing values before the chart changes.

2. Review and edit the table

After importing, review the editable table below the graph. You can reverse the row order, add rows, add or import columns, and edit values without losing their precision. The graph updates as you work, so you can correct labels or remove an outlier before downloading.

3. Customize each series

Use the series controls to rename a line, choose its color, or hide it temporarily. The display options control points, grid lines, tooltips, and filled areas. Use the zoom and pan controls when a dataset contains more points than can fit comfortably in the chart.

4. Export the finished chart

When the graph is ready, choose Download PNG for a shareable image or Download SVG for a scalable graphic. Select the image size and render scale that fit your report, presentation, or website.

How line charts work

A line chart displays values as points connected by straight or smoothed line segments. The horizontal axis shows an ordered category, such as a date, week, month, experiment step, or measurement number. The vertical axis shows the numeric value. Reading the line from left to right makes upward trends, declines, repeated cycles, and sudden changes easy to recognize.

Line charts work best when the order of observations matters. They are a natural choice for stock prices, website traffic, temperature readings, sales over time, and other data where each value follows the previous one. Multiple lines can reveal whether series move together, diverge, or respond differently to the same event.

Choosing the right line-chart scale

The vertical scale affects how a trend feels to the reader. A very wide range can make meaningful changes look flat, while a narrow range can make small differences look dramatic. Use the axis controls to frame the data honestly, label the units clearly, and avoid comparing series with incompatible units on the same axis without explaining the difference.

Reading patterns and comparisons

Look for sustained direction rather than reacting to one point. A gradual slope can indicate steady growth, a sharp bend may mark an event, and repeated peaks can suggest seasonality. When comparing several lines, check whether they share the same starting point, whether their changes happen at the same time, and whether one series consistently leads or lags another.

Keep the axes clear and use consistent units. A descriptive title and axis labels help readers understand the measurement without guessing. Avoid adding more lines than the reader can distinguish; hiding a series or splitting a crowded comparison into separate charts often makes the story clearer. A line chart is most useful when it supports a specific question about change, comparison, or movement.

Practical example: track weekly service demand

Use week-ending dates as labels and completed requests as values. A second series can show the prior year or a comparable region, provided both use the same definition and reporting calendar. The line makes sustained growth, seasonal peaks, and abrupt changes easier to locate than a table, while the editable rows preserve the values behind each point.

Handle missing and irregular periods explicitly

A line visually connects neighboring points, which can imply continuity where none exists. Do not replace an unknown value with zero unless zero was actually observed. Note gaps, ensure labels follow chronological order, and be cautious when intervals vary. A monthly point placed beside a weekly point should not be treated as an equal step.

Distinguish change from cause

A bend in a line may coincide with a launch, policy, campaign, or external event, but timing alone does not prove causation. Check comparison groups, measurement changes, seasonality, and uncertainty before making a claim. For relationships between two numeric variables without a time sequence, use a scatter plot instead.
