Vertical bars are a compact way to compare values across a short sequence of categories. They are especially effective for months, quarters, age groups, product tiers, or other labels that can be read comfortably along the horizontal axis. This tool keeps the data table and chart connected, so every edit appears in the graphic immediately.
Start with one row per category. A simple source might contain a month column followed by revenue, orders, and returns. Select Import data to load CSV, TSV, TXT, JSON, XLSX, or XLS files, or paste comma-separated values directly into the importer. The preview lets you choose the label field, primary value field, extra numeric series, worksheet, delimiter, and included rows before changing the chart.
Use short, specific category names because they will appear beneath the columns. If the source contains dates, keep them in chronological order unless the purpose of the chart is to show a ranking. Consistent units are important: amounts in dollars and percentages should not share one value axis unless the relationship is clearly explained.
The editable table supports direct corrections after import. Add or remove rows, reverse the sequence, sort labels or values, append a new series, or import a separate numeric column. Sorting is useful for highlighting the tallest and shortest columns, while preserving the original order is usually better for time-based categories.
Rename each series and assign colors that remain distinct at a glance. The Bar width control changes column thickness, while Bar gap adjusts the separation between series inside each category. Rounded corners are optional and value labels can be shown when exact numbers matter. Grid and tooltip settings help balance precision against visual simplicity.
For a grouped comparison, use the same color for the same measure throughout the chart. Two or three series are normally easy to scan; a large number of adjacent columns can make category boundaries difficult to recognize. Hide a series temporarily when you need to inspect another one without deleting its data.
Download the finished chart as PNG for documents and social posts or SVG for layouts that may be resized. The export window includes preset dimensions, custom width and height, aspect ratios, render scale, background transparency, and a preview. Choose a size that leaves enough room for every category label.
This orientation works well when the number of categories is modest and their order has meaning. Typical examples include monthly subscriptions, quarterly expenses, yearly production, scores by grade, and results across experiment groups. The shared baseline makes magnitude easier to judge than a table of isolated numbers.
Because readers interpret column height as quantity, the value axis should ordinarily begin at zero. Starting above zero can make a small change look dramatic. If values include negatives, make the zero line easy to identify and explain what movement above and below it represents.
Long text is the main limitation of vertical bars. Abbreviate labels carefully, reduce the number of visible categories with zoom, or move to a horizontal chart when names need more space. Avoid rotating every label unless it remains readable at the final export size.
A useful chart answers one comparison question. Give it a descriptive title, identify units on the value axis, and reserve the strongest color for the most important series. Value labels should support the bars rather than compete with them, and decorative effects should never obscure differences in height.
Place months in chronological order and production totals in the value column. The vertical layout makes month-to-month magnitude easy to compare while preserving the time sequence. Add a second series only when it uses the same units and period definition, such as actual versus planned output.
Each column represents a separate group or interval. If the main question concerns continuous movement across many time points, a line chart better communicates the sequence. If category names are long or ranking is more important than chronology, use a horizontal bar chart.
A percentage is interpretable only when readers know the base population. Two bars can show the same rate while representing very different numbers of observations. Include counts or explain the denominator when sample size affects the conclusion, and keep category definitions consistent across periods.
