This free pyramid chart maker places one series to the left and another to the right of a shared center line. It is ideal for age-and-sex population structures, survey splits, cohort comparisons, and any two-sided category comparison.

The chart always calculates a symmetric horizontal range, so equal bar lengths mean equal magnitudes. Negative values are not needed: enter ordinary non-negative values and the tool mirrors the left series automatically.
Original values preserve the units you enter. Percent of each side normalizes the left and right totals independently to 100%, which helps compare shapes when the two populations differ in size.
Keep category labels short, order groups consistently, and use the zoom controls when the chart contains many rows. Value labels, grid lines, colors, titles, and tooltips can all be adjusted before export.

Place age bands in the category column and the two population counts in the left and right columns. Consistent bands and a shared scale make differences in the age structure visible: a wide base may indicate more young people, while wider older bands may reflect an aging population. The chart describes composition; it does not explain migration, birth rates, mortality, or policy effects by itself.
Counts preserve the size difference between the two populations. Independently normalized percentages remove that size difference and emphasize shape within each side. State the selected mode clearly, because a group can occupy a larger percentage while still representing fewer people in absolute terms.
Both sides must use the same category definitions, time period, geographic scope, and inclusion rules. Do not mix five-year bands with ten-year bands or compare a resident population with a different eligibility base. Include unknown or unclassified records when their omission would materially change the shape.
A pyramid is useful for two matched series across ordered categories. For unrelated categories or more than two groups, a horizontal bar chart is usually easier to read and label accurately.
